Money Heist Season 5A Review

Money Heist, the popular Spanish show is back with another nail-biting and acton packed season 5. With new characters explored and old favourites keeping us hooked, the series continues to dominate OTT platforms to remain the most in-demand series worldwide.

The action-packed season features tons of explosions while balancing it with an equal amount of heartwarming emotions and situations. With a special squad assembled to take out the gang irrespective of the casualties and the master planner Professor (Alvaro Morte) in chains, season 5 is nothing short of a rollercoaster ride.

Like the original pattern of Money Heist, Season 5 devotes a significant portion of its time to flashbacks, though certain scenes seem like a drag. We are introduced to the tech-wiz Rafael (Patrick Criad) who is the son of master-criminal Berlin (Pedro Alonso). While his ties to the current heist remains a mystery, it surely will intersect in the final season.

The female characters are at the forefront of the gang this season calling most of the shots which were rightly portrayed and executed. Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) is another strong point of this season as she leads the gang against the commandos with her tricks and improvisations.

Money Heist, originally known as ‘La Casa de Papel’ is one the most-watched shows on Netflix and for the right reasons too. The series is filled with heart-thumping moments, unpredictable storylines and exciting twists.

However, all in all, it seems that Money Heist has continued its rather downhill performance since its initial two seasons. Sure, the series has exploded in popularity across several countries and has even garnered native versions of ‘Bella Ciao’, the series seems to have fallen from its high pedestal.

While Money Heist season 5 ends on an exciting cliffhanger, it perhaps was the only saving grace of a rather otherwise dragging storyline.

The cliffhanger of Money Heist Season 5 Volume 1 certainly amps up things and ends on a crucial note that makes the wait for the last instalment almost unbearable. Despite its flaws and low points, creator Álex Pina knows which strings to pull to make us stay invested in the show.

A surprising death of a character, in the end, puts a big dent in the professor’s plan, so it will interesting to see how the gang recovers from this loss. Money Heist Season 5 Volume 2 will be streaming on Netflix on December 3, 2021.

Final Verdict: 3.5 stars (out of 5)
