Avatar 2 Becomes 4th Highest-Grossing Film of All Time

Avatar: The Way of Water has achieved a new milestone as it maintains its dominance at the box office. Since its theatrical release on December 16, the movie had amassed a worldwide total of $2.116 billion as of this Saturday. This makes the blockbuster the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.06 billion).

This milestone also means that James Cameron, the film’s director, has now helmed three of the top four highest-grossing movies ever.

With $2.923 billion, James Cameron’s first Avatar film, which debuted in 2009, continues to occupy the top rank. The other Cameron film in the top 4, Titanic (1997), is in third place with $2.195 billion, just behind Avengers: Endgame ($2.799 billion).

While the film has broken several records at the box office, Zoe Saldaña, the actress who portrays Na’vi warrior Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar films has set her own record. Zoe has become the first woman to feature in four movies that have made over $2 billion at the box office which include: Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avatar: The Way of Water.

The James Cameron-directed epic was nominated for four Oscars in the category of production design, sound, and visual effects in addition to best picture. The complicated relationship between the franchise and the Oscars is continued by James Cameron not being nominated in the best director category.

The sequel is yet to earn more than the original “Avatar,” which brought in $2.9 billion. However, it was profitable enough for Cameron to move through with filming the franchise’s third, fourth, and fifth instalments, which are scheduled for release in 2024, 2026, and 2028, respectively.

If you haven’t watched it yet, Disney+, the company’s streaming platform will eventually stream Avatar: The Way of Water, albeit it is now only available in theatres. Given how successful Avatar 2 was commercially, it wouldn’t surprise us if it took even longer for the movie to be added to Disney+’s catalogue.
