The streaming giant, Netflix has renewed Narcos: Mexico, the popular drug cartel franchise for Season 3. Fans of the crime drama series will be elated at the announcement since it has been 8 months since the series released its 2nd Season in February. However, the announcement brings with it a few changes at the helm of the series. Eric Newman, the showrunner for the five instalments of Narcos will hand over his reins to Co-Creator Carlo Bernard, who will be in charge of Season 3. Even Diego Luna, who played Mexican drug lord, Miguel Félix will not be returning to the show.

Diego Luna not appearing in the new season will not affect the storyline of the show as towards the end of Season 2, his character was put in jail for racketeering, drug crimes and for the murder of DEA agent Kiki Camarena. In an interesting take, Wagner Moura, who played Pablo Escobar in the first two seasons of Narcos, will direct two episodes in the new season. The actor had earlier made a cameo in Narcos: Mexico which set up an interaction between Miguel Félix and Pablo Escobar.

Season 3, which is set in the 90s, will explore the aftermath of Miguel’s shattered empire. It will showcase the emergence of independent drug cartels among political instability that will bring with it a new definition of violence as never seen before. As Miguel Filex states it himself during the last scene of Season 2. “Now you’ll see what happens when the cage breaks open and all the animals run free.”
